Adventure

A number of years ago, a good friend of mine told me that each year she sets a one word intention for the year. As decisions needed to be made, she reconciled them against her intention for the year. I picked up this habit.

My word for the year is adventure.

Most people think about adventure as going new places, doing new things, trying new foods, and exploring exotic places.

Sometimes adventures aren’t grand external trips. Sometimes they can be grand internal trips.

What if we slowed down and looked at things through the lens of wonder? What if we looked at others through the lens of wonder? What would we find? Adventure can be an internal journey to look at what makes us human and find the alternative explanation for who we are and what about that makes us human.

As I do on a daily basis, I look for an inspiring quote for my day and then translate it into action as it relates to adventure. Today I found a quote by Rose Franken:

To see someone as they are, even as they act a fool, and to love them even more for it, is something special.

This made me wonder, “to see someone as they really are (not our perception) and to love them even more for it, is something special indeed”. What if we were to see ourselves as we really are and not what we believe about ourselves? Adventure implies risk, risk implies doing something out of our comfort zone. What if today’s adventure was seeing ourself as we really are and finding all the things that are worthy of loving.

The world decries change. I hear often things need to change. We are the only thing that we can truly change. Change starts internally.

What if our adventure today was to see ourselves for who we truly are inside, to find all the things that are worthy of love and compassion? As I work today with clients, my adventure will be to help clients see themselves as they truly are and, in order to do that, it starts with me taking that same adventure.

Come take an adventure with me to discover the real you and look at yourself with wonder and newness. What would change in your life if you looked at yourself with newness and with compassion?

I was once asked by a wise mentor, what would change if I could see myself with the same compassion that I look at my clients with?

My response: everything.
